Reading the mail on Sunday they headlined “Never mind a nanny, the latest must – have for wealthy mothers is their own home secretary or rather family PA”.
This reminded me not only of the changing times for professional nannies’ roles, but our ability to be adaptable in all work situations. I teach ‘dealing with change’ as a training session. Some of the work we do is how to think about the opportunities that may arise due to changes in your work. Consider new roles, responsibility and further training. This can in fact help you move on if needed later within your career or if you have a change of circumstances. A good friend of mine recently got made redundant. The new role she was taking on required her to touch type, not a skill she processed. We spoke over lunch and I told her about some on line training she could use. Master it I said it really does make a difference. Touch typing is a very useful skill I have used every day in my work and more recently to churn out essays for my university course.
Nannies was my business for many years, but where nannies would often be employed in the role until the charges went into senior school this now tends to end at reception. Parents do not wish to pay for a 6-hour cap for term time schooling. However private schools have 17 weeks holiday a year and state schools 13 weeks which many parents will not have in annual leave so a big problem for many if the nanny is made redundant.
So, what is the answer. If a company offers you training opportunities take it, once you master one system your skills are normally transferable. Learning takes time, but it comes with experience and your desire to learn new skills. If you are aware your job maybe changing as above with nannies or you may feel your role might become part time look at other career opportunities. Within your work you may feel that you could be helpful in other roles that will allow you to work the hours you need. So, for instance with a nanny can you become a Nanny/PA/dog walker, or do you want to retrain in a new career? and this will allow you to attend college part time of even university. I chatted to a nanny the other day and her charges are at full time school come September she is off to train during school hours as a primary teacher.
So possible choices to consider:
Offer to work as Nanny/Housekeeper
Dual role Nanny/PA
Work part time as nanny and then in a school or a nursery school during those hours
Job share with another family
Take training offered you become more valuable to the company
Discuss areas you may able to develop in the company that are not be exploited and could help secure your hours
Look at possible promotions that may occur and apply
If the company has other locations, ask if you can transfer
Spilt working week between two jobs if you are able
Change can open doors and offer new opportunities for you. It can be challenging but also exciting, it will give you confidence as you have achieved something.
Don’t be afraid- Believe and you will achieve
Project Action London helps companies or individuals who need to review skill sets for changes within work or a career move. We assist people to look at their background and how transferable these skills are to open new opportunities. Also, to help look at new careers and retrain.
